Unit 4 Reflection:
Studio one related to celebrations for the celebration of fun. When we made these in class, everyone was so excited and so anxious to start and create their finger puppet. The celebrations of creativity was inspiring in my own creation. I thought of the most fun person I know, which is my father. Then I tried to think of something that related to my father but I could identify with. For as long I can remember my father has referred to me as Puddin, so I decided to make a pudding cup as my finger puppet.
Studio two relates to celebrations by celebrating traditions. My magazine cover celebrates my fathers craft of building things by hand. This is something that not everyone does now. They usually just hire someone to do it for them, which is actually how he makes his living. But he does all his work on his own and is so passionate about it. I love going to see the progress he makes on his current project, and I love seeing his eyes light up when he talks about it. So I celebrate his hard work through my cover.
Studio three relates to celebrations by celebrating personal expression. It goes along with my lesson plan for the final. Creating a collage that expresses an emotion. My emotion is happiness, so I put pictures of things that make me feel happy, or that show people happy. Celebrating expression is something that all kids should experience, because all emotions are felt to some extent in each student. As stated in Pink (2006) "It [symphony] is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyze; to see relationships between seemingly unrelated fields." (p. 130).
I think that allowing students to celebrate their creativity. Each student is unique and see the world differently, and express the world differently. Having examples of other people who have expressed their views is something that could inspire the students to create their own, and celebrate what is already created. Bang says (1991) "We see pictures as extensions of reality" (p. 60). Letting students make that connection between their reality and the way they portray it on their paper or canvas is something that student's should get to do more often.
